Somewhere around February of that year, Trystan got the idea of having a huge Halloween party. Mind you, she had been putting on big Halloween parties since 1986, each one getting more elaborate and having more people; this was just the natural progression of things.

But Trystan wanted a different theme for this Halloween party -- everyone should come dressed as a famous person who had died. It could be a real, historical figure, or a character out of literature or movies. As long as it was someone who died, at least momentarily. Resurrected characters, undead creatures, and ghosts were all okay too.

As the year progressed, her fantasy of this party grew larger and larger. She was partly inspired by the GBACG's Fairy Tale Masquerade Ball, especially by their invitation. It was chock full of details and suggestions on what to wear. And, since a good many of the potential guests were not necessarily avid costumers, Trystan decided to include as many how-tos in the invitation as possible (an idea we've stuck with through successive parties).

To top it all off, Thomas suggested holding the party at his mother's lovely home which was two stories and had an interesting covered front walkway. A perfect venue, for which we began collection a huge variety of Halloween decorations. The stage was set for what would become a decade-long obsession ...

The Invitation:

An early DTP effort. The background text lists a variety of famous dead people. The invite also states it's the "first and last annual FDPB" -- little did we know at the time how long this idea would last!
